The Museum prides itself on being one of the most picturesque venues in the local area known for its natural surroundings. Set amongst natural bush land on Scenic Hill, the grounds of the museum are an ideal location for a wedding with a difference. The wedding can be held in the historic St James Church and the guests can then move a short distance to the reception area within the grounds of the museum. Alternatively, you can opt to have your wedding portraits taken here for a nominal fee - what better background can you imagine capturing your special day?
The Museum can also cater for christenings, social functions, childcare groups, arts classes and many other social groups as well as seminars and workshops for your commercial and not for profit organisation.
St James Church (1907)
This is the oldest church in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, built in 1907 on the property "The Cliffs" between Yoogali and Bilbul as a non-denominational church. It was later moved in 1913 to what is now known as Hanwood, by placing it on large pine logs which acted as a sled, pulled by a steam traction engine.
The first service in the relocated church was held around September 1913. Fifty-eight years later, on Sunday 16th May 1971, Archdeacon Victor Twigg conducted the last service.
The church was relocated to the museum in June 1971. Today, it serves as a charming venue for commemorative services, weddings, christenings, and other special occasions. Intimate and welcoming, it is ideally suited for small weddings and naming ceremonies, with seating for up to 30 guests.
Old Baptist Church (1925)
The original Baptist Church community initially held services in private homes and at the Lyceum Theatre. After years of saving, their first dedicated church was constructed on Wakaden Street and officially opened in January 1925. The modest building, which could accommodate up to 100 parishioners, served the congregation faithfully for nearly 50 years.
In 1971, when a new brick church was built, the original structure was generously donated to the museum. To transport the building, the roof beams had to be cut—a compromise that, over time, led to the failure of the bush carpentry. Combined with deteriorating fibro walls, the church gradually fell into disrepair.
Eventually, a difficult decision had to be made: demolish the building or invest in its restoration. Fortunately, the latter path was chosen. Today, the beautifully restored church stands as a cherished piece of local history, continuing to be valued and enjoyed by the community.
Both churches can be hired in conjunction with Myall Park Hall, or why not take advantage of the natural bush surrounds and have your reception at one of the outdoor areas located within the park.
